When choosing the glass for your windows and doors ther are various options – each with its own unique caharteristics. In many cases ther is a certain type of glass that is specified as standard, and in some cases you can specify a particluar type of glass you require. in any case it is good to know the qualities of the glass in your home or office.

Here are some of the option available:

float glass and mirrors

obscure patterns

tinted glass – various colours

toughened safety glass toughened

laminated saftey glass

various smart glass options smart glass

bullet-resistant glass

double-glazing units for windows and doors

Clear Float Glass

Float Glass is also called Annealed glass. It is called float glass called because it is floated in its molten state on a bath of liquid metal, usually tin, and allowed to cool. The process produces glass which has a naturally polished finish, is flat, and capable of being manufactured to a uniform thickness.
Float glass is available in various thicknesses, the most standard of which is 4mm and 5mm.
Float glass breaks into large jagged shards with numerous small splinters. Because of its breakage pattern, it is not considered a safety glass. On breaking there is a significant risk that large pieces of glass will fall from the frame and, as a result, there are regulations in South Africa as to where float glass can and cannot be used.

Toughened Safety Glass

Toughened glass is produced by heating annealed glass in a furnace to approximately 700°C and then cooling the outer surfaces rapidly using jets of cold air so creating high compression forces within them. This increases the strength of the glass by a factor of four or five times that of annealed glass / float glass.

This rapid cooling process is the key element in the physical changes in annealed glass that creates toughened glass. It is strong enough to resist the impact of a person striking it.
Because of its strength, tempered glass is essential in certaion applications.

Features and Applications

Toughened safety glass is Grade A safety glass

Up to 500% stronger than annealed glass and therefore is more resistant to thermal breakage and can withstand greater windloads

On breaking it fragments into many small harmless pieces unlike annealed glass

Can be used within a temperature range of minus 70°C to plus 300°C (surface temperature should not exceed 250°C if other surface is lower than 0°C ambient)

Recommended for door, side and low lites, frameless entries, balustrades, shower, bath screen panels and furniture

Laminated Safety Glass

Laminated glass consists of two or more panes of float glass bonded together by an interlayer consisting of one or more sheets of polyvinyl butyral (PVB), which provides a high degree of personal safety. When accidental impact is made the glass will shatter, but be held intact by the PVB interlayer.

Acoustical Comfort – The configuration and nature of laminated glass provides much better sound insulation compared to ordinary glass, especially at certain frequencies. More information available on request.

Solar Energy Control – Laminated glass is an ideal product to protect against harmful U.V. rays. More than 99.5% of U.V. can be filtered, thus reducing fading and discoloration of goods. In addition, laminated glass allows control of solar energy with a choice of different colours. More information available on request.

Safety – Provides a high degree of personal safety. When accidental impact is made the glass will shatter, but be held intact by the PVB interlayer.

Solar Heat Control – These products are manufactured to give the designer a greater choice of colours when looking at the aesthetics of the building. These products also offer a greater degree of solar control, which assists with the airconditioning requirements. Glass that absorbs solar energy is susceptible to breakage from thermally induced stresses and therefore a prerequisite is that the edges be polished and free from any damage.

Sound Control – Laminated glass is highly effective in reducing unwanted sound into a building. Simply put, its exceptional sound control is the result of the sound dampening characteristics of the PVB interlayer.

Ultra-violet Elimination – The effects of ultra-violet radiation below 380 nanometers can be extremely damaging to natural & synthetic fabrics and finishes. Laminated architectural glass with clear or tinted interlayers is essentially a barrier to ultra-violet radiation.
